Future Voices Scheme (Paid 6 week internship)

The World Service is one of the worlds leading news broadcasters we are currently available in twenty-nine languages, including English. The World Service Group, all the international parts of the BBC, has a weekly audience of over 346 million people around the world.

The BBC reports from more locations than any other international broadcaster, and increasingly we are training up bilingual reporters, who can bring us the story in English and another language. We are trusted and respected by our audiences, and were a multi-media broadcaster, on radio, TV and digital.

World Service Languages has TV bulletins ineleven languagesin addition to its long-established Persian and Arabic TV channels. We are a dynamic, ambitious, challenging news organisation bringing the worlds stories to BBC News, at New Broadcasting House in the heart of London.

Role Responsibility

We will give you the chance to experience life at the BBC as a journalist, including what it is like working in two languages – English and one other of the World Service languages listed below. You do not need any journalism skills before you start but you must be interested and able to demonstrate that interest. We will give you training in radio, TV and digital journalism. You will spend time in the relevant language service within World Service, and in other parts of BBC News. You will meet a whole range of people here, from bilingual reporters, producers, editors, presenters, camera operators to online and social media journalists. You will come out with a good idea of the wide-ranging journalism that goes on at the BBC World Service and other parts of BBC News.You will have a mentor during your work experience, and we will do our best to make it interesting and productive for you.

The Ideal Candidate

To participate in the scheme you must be fully bilingual in speaking, reading and writing in both English and one of the following languages:

You will be able to speak, read and write fluently in both of your two languages. You will be passionate about international news, be interested in the world you live in both in the UK and abroad, and keep up with the news. You will also be familiar with the BBC World Service. You will be a great communicator, curious and questioning, and good at getting your message across.

Before you apply

You must be able to show that you are passionate about news, and about pursuing a career in the media industry.

You must be over 18, and, to get the most out of your time here you should be available to attend every day Monday-Friday for the dates stated. The scheme takes place at New Broadcasting House in London. We want you to have a great experience with us, so from day one you will get to experience working life on our programmes, and how our journalists contribute and develop ideas, as well as how they work in two languages.

As part of your application we will ask you a series of questions to understand your interest and passion for news and creating content. You should therefore be ready to:

• Link to 2 pieces of content you have created, that will show us your creativity and demonstrate your passion for news – this could be anything from a tweet, a posting on your Facebook page, a blog, a piece of audio or a short film you have made.
• Provide a sixty second clip of why you want to come on this training scheme and why we should choose you. This is your elevator pitch and should be done in both your languages.

There will be space on the application form for you to provide this.
