Alexander von Humboldt Foundation International Climate Protection Fellowships

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is offering up to 20 International Climate Protection Fellowships to young climate experts from non-European transition or developing countries to conduct research-based projects in the field of climate protection and climate-related resource conservation in Germany for 1 year.

Fellows are free to choose their own projects and their own German host institutions. The 1-year Fellowships will commence in March 2019 but they have to attend an intensive German course in Bonn in January/February 2019. Fellowships may be extended for up to 3 months if fellows are accompanied by children below 12.

Benefits


The fellowship quantum is €2,150 or €2,450 for fellows without a doctorate and €2,650 for postdoctoral researchers.  This includes a mobility lump sum and a contribution towards health and liability insurance.

Fellows will be given a 1 to 2-month intensive language course in Germany before the start of the fellowship. Fellows with little or no knowledge of German are strongly advised to take a two-month intensive language course in Germany.

They will receive a research allowance of €800 per month for research-based proposals in the natural and engineering sciences and €500 for proposals in the humanities and social sciences; an  a lump sum travel expense; a 1 to 2-month Europe allowance for studying or researching at another European country, should this be required; and family allowances for family members who stay for at least 3 months. The family allowances are up to €326 per month for the marital partner and up to €240 per month for each child. Allowances will also be given to single parents with accompanying children below the age of 18, who are staying for at least 3 months (€400 per month for the first child, €100 per month for every additional child). The fellowship can be extended by up to 3 months if fellows are accompanied by children below 12.

In addition, fellows benefit for the entirety of his career in the form of extensive alumni funding and networking support.

Eligibility


Applicants must be resident in, working in and citizens of non-European emerging or developing countries (see the Official Website for eligible countries), with a background in the natural and engineering sciences, or have been engaged in legal, economic and societal issues relating to climate change. They must be must be working in the field of climate protection or climate-related resource conservation. The candidate must have completed his/her first university degree (Bachelors or equivalent) within the past 12 years and has proven leadership skills. He/she should have at least 48 months of relevant work experience, failing which, he/she must possess a doctorate in the field of climate protection or climate-related resource conservation. Post-doctoral applicants should have scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals according to international standards. Proficiency in English and/or German is required.

A mentoring agreement and confirmation of hosting from the German host institution must be provided. Applicants must also provide 2 expert references by individuals qualified to comment on the candidate’s professional, personal and, if applicable, academic eligibility as well as leadership potential.

  • Future potential


Post-doctoral researchers will be assessed not only on leadership skills, but also their academic qualifications (quality of the key publications cited) as well as the academic potential of the proposal to drive innovation in the specialist field.
