G7 Oceans Youth Innovation Challenge 2018 (Fully-funded to G7 Environment Ministerial Meetings in Canada)

Ocean Wise invites entries for the G7 Oceans Youth Innovation Challenge 2018. Presented by Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Oceans Youth Innovation Challenge is calling all youth to share their ideas on protecting our oceans for a chance to attend the G7 Environment Ministerial in October!

Are you interested in keeping our oceans healthy? Do you have an innovative ocean solution? Share your idea for a chance to attend the G7 Environment Ministerial Meetings in October!

On January 1, 2018, Canada assumed Presidency of the G7 group of industrialized countries. Canada’s presidency is orientated around 5 themes, one of which is “Working Together on Climate Change, Oceans and Clean Energy”. If you are 18-25 years old, have reached the age of majority in your country or province (Canada) and are a citizen of one of the G7 countries, we would like to hear your solutions to challenges facing global ocean health!

They are looking for solutions to one of the following ocean health challenge areas:

  • Plastics
  • Coasts
  • Resilient Communities
  • Climate
  • Clean Energy
  • Fishing

Prizes

Two prizes will be awarded: one for a winner from Canada and one for a winner from another G7 country. Environment and Climate Change Canada will provide each winner with:

  • Economy travel from their home to join Minister of the Environment of Canada, Catherine McKenna, at a future G7 meeting in Canada focusing on the environment, to take place before the end of 2018.
  • Hotel accommodations for the duration of the trip at the standard National Joint Council rates (below)
  • Meals and expenses in accordance with rates prescribed in the National Joint Council Travel Directive allowances

Each winner will be required to complete and sign a “winner license, consent and release”; and a “Participant Confirmation Letter” in order to receive their prize. A link to these documents are available here: coming soon.

Eligibility

  • Open to young citizens of a G7 country (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States)
  • Participants must between the ages of 18 and 25 years old, or age of majority in his/her province or territory of residence.
  • The Oceans Youth Innovation Challenge is not open to employees, immediate family members of employees or persons living under the same roof as an employee of the Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada or Ocean Wise Conservation Association.

They are looking for video entries that provide an innovative solution in order to realize your vision for oceans in 2050. For example, they could include ideas about one of the following areas of global ocean health:

  • ocean literacy / knowledge mobilization
  • climate change / acidification of the oceans
  • pollution / plastics
  • over fishing / destructive fishing
  • habitat destruction / coastal development

Entry Requirements

  • Videos must be presented in English, French, German, Italian or Japanese.
  • Videos must be no longer than two (2) minutes in length.
  • Each video entry may only identify one participant. For videos created by more than one participant, any prize awarded for that entry will be awarded to the identified contestant.
  • Videos may contain images of the identified participant only. Entries will be declared invalid if anyone other than the participant appears in the video.
  • Video entries will be declared invalid if they are late, illegible, incomplete, irregular, forged, garbled or reproduced.
  • Video entries will be declared invalid if any third party trademarks, brands and/or logos such as sports team logos, businesses, restaurants or coffee chains, etc. are used or displayed, either in a photograph, a drawing or in a piece of creative writing, or in any part of the video, obviously or subliminally.
  • Video entries will be declared invalid if they negatively depict another person, nation, country, ethnicity, race, religion, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
  • Video entries will be declared invalid if they contain content deemed offensive or inappropriate including but not limited to nudity, vulgarity or violence.
  • All entries must be shared on Twitter. Participants should make a copy of their video if they wish to keep a copy.
  • Videos must be original videos taken within one (1) year before the date of entry.
  • There is no fee to enter this Challenge, and no purchase is necessary.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Vision (30%): The applicant’s vision for healthy and productive oceans is global and considers multiple different factors. The vision is inspirational and aspirational.
  • Challenge (5%): The applicant shows depth and understanding of a current and pressing challenge in global ocean health.
    • The proposed solution is convincing, well supported, feasible and addresses potential objections
    • The proposed solution is novel,  has a high impact, provides insight into the issue beyond existing ocean targets and goals and is arguable as the best possible solutionSolution (55%)
  • Communication (5%): Applicant’s overall communication style is clear, enthusiastic and confident.
  • Overall (5%): The applicant shows a strong understanding of challenges and sustainable solutions in global ocean health.

Application

Candidates are invited to share a short video no longer than two (2) minutes on Twitter using #myoceans2050. The video should respond to the following question:

  1. What is your vision for healthy and productive oceans in 2050?
  2. What innovative solutions would you recommend be adopted to reach this goal?

One winner from Canada and one from another G7 country (France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States) will be selected by the panel of judges. Winners’ names will be announced on July 15, 2018.
