Beat Air Pollution, 12th Eco-generation Environmental Essay Competition

Deadline: 2nd September, 2019 (GMT 0)

Samsung Engineering jointly with UN environment would like to launch “The 12 th Eco-generation Environmental Essay Competition” inviting youth all over the world to raise awareness on the theme of the upcoming World Environment Day – Beat Air Pollution.

As many of you know, World Environment Day is the United Nations flagship day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

Often you can’t even see it, but air pollution is everywhere. With every breath, you are probably sucking in tiny particles that attack your lungs, heart and brain. World Environment Day 2019 is issuing a call to action to combat this global crisis.

Chosen by this year’s host, China, the theme of World Environment Day 2019 invites us all to consider how we can change our everyday lives to reduce the amount of air pollution we produce, and thwart its contribution to global warming and its effects on our own health.

We are faced with an urgent task. Nine out of ten people worldwide are exposed to levels of air pollutants that exceed World Health Organization safe levels. Around seven million people worldwide die prematurely each year from air pollution with about four million of these deaths occurring in Asia-Pacific. Air pollution causes a host of other problems, including illness and lower IQs. It doesn’t just impact human health and economic growth. Many of the pollutants also cause global warming.

Air pollution is preventable, but we need everyone on board – from individuals and organizations to private companies and government.

To commemorate WED and its annual theme, Eco-generation would like to celebrate the bigger and better WED than ever and to call on Tunza Eco-generation members around the world to show their will to act on “Beat Air Pollution” for our future generations by writing an essay.
It also aims to collect inspiring and creative ideas on why we should reduce air pollution by requiring them to think about diverse ways that we can help to combat air pollution.
